Pat Sheehan MLA Former Irish Political Prisoner and Hunger Striker

Pat Sheehan MLA former Irish Political prisoner and hunger striker is currently in “Palestine 48” as part of a CEPR delegation and will today attempt to visit the Palestinian hunger strikers in the Israeli jails on a fact finding mission to investigate their current health conditions.

Mr. Sheehan will also visit with the families of the Palestinian prisoners Ayman Al-Sharawna and Samer Issawi who have been on a hunger strike for several months. In addition, the delegation will meet with a number of Palestinian children from Silwan area in Occupied Jerusalem. An area where children continually get arrested by the IOF. Additionally many of these children are treated harshly by the Israeli occupation soldiers, the children will recant their stories to the EU Delegation.

The CEPR’s Director, Dr Arafat Shoukri stated this most recent delegation is part of an overall CEPR strategy to continually highlight and bring to the forefront the lack of Human Rights afforded to Palestinians in Israeli jails with respect to the Geneva Convention. There are 4750 Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli jails and the appalling prison conditions afforded them fall well below minimum standards required by International Law.

Dr. Shoukri said “The CEPR delegation will meet with the ambassador to Israel in Tel Aviv and will investigate the living conditions of the Palestinian prisoners in general and of those who are on a hunger strike in particular. He continued, ” The delegation will prepare a full report on the conditions of the Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli occupation jails and the Israeli violations against them. “ Once completed, the Delegation will submit the report to specialized committees at the European Parliament.”

Dr. Arafat Shoukri stated that the delegation is a continuation of the efforts made by the CEPR over the past year to have the European Union (EU) and its member states intervene and stop the continued Israeli human rights violations against the Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli jails.
